Significant Progress Made for Noro Roads Improvements
Improvements to Noro Roads in Western Province have made substantial progress in recent months, with the physical progress reached 30 percent. This critical investment, funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Solomon Islands Government through the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), is set to enhance the climate resilience and safety of key transportation links for the region.
The works are being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, with all activities closely monitored under the professional supervision of Egis Asia Company Limited.
To date, site clearing, grubbing, stripping of topsoil, and milling of Town Council and Market Road, Kitano Road, Industrial Road, Noro to Munda Road and Noro Highway have been completed. In addition, the subgrade improvement, subbase, and base course placement, compaction and field density test for these roads have been completed as well.
Furthermore, the contractor is continuously in progression with the application of prime coat and 10mm aggregate seal to Noro Highway, Kitano Road, Industrial Road and Noro to Munda Road.
The Permanent Secretary of MID, Alan Lilia, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Noro roads are critical to the daily lives of Noro’s residents. By improving the quality and safety of these roads, we are creating smoother access to markets, schools, and essential services. These upgrades will also support local businesses and industries, particularly the fisheries sector, by enhancing transportation links for goods and services.”
The ongoing improvements to Noro Roads are a testament to the Solomon Islands Government's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and promoting sustainable economic growth. By investing in critical transportation links, SIRAP2 aims to improve the resilience, accessibility, and safety of the country’s infrastructure network, delivering long-term benefits to its people and businesses.
In addition to the work in Noro Roads, other program includes; Construction of Four New Bridges in Malaita Province: Kolofe 1, Kolofe 2, Su’u Harbor, and Bira Bridges, Upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports, Santa Cruz Airfield upgrades and Investments in Air Navigation Systems for Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, and support for regional airport maintenance.
