Contractor for Santa Cruz Airfield Upgrade Mobilizes for Construction.

The mobilization of the contractor for the upgrade works at Santa Cruz (Lata) Airfield is progressing steadily. The upgrade, taking place in Temotu Province, is supported by the World Bank under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), and is being implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA).

Since August 26, 2024, the contractor’s mobilization efforts have been well underway, with three barges scheduled to transport equipment and materials from Honiara to Lata. The first barge has already arrived at Lata, delivering vehicles, equipment, and materials. The second barge, carrying camp materials, is expected to arrive in Lata by the second week of October 2024, while the third barge, transporting the crushing plant is expected to arrive in Lata by the end of October 2024. Additionally, the preparation of the Contractor’s Environmental and Social Management Plan is near to finalize, and geotechnical investigations and unexploded ordnance clearance have been successfully completed.

The Permanent Secretary of MCA, Mr. Alywn Danitofea, reiterated the Government’s dedication to the project, stating, "the Santa Cruz Airfield upgrade is a vital infrastructure investment that aligns with our national development goals; thus, it remains a high priority for the Government aiming to benefit the local community and the national economy."

In addition to the Santa Cruz Airfield upgrade, SIRAP2 is investing in several other key infrastructure, including the improvements to Noro Road, construction of four new bridges in Malaita (Kolofe 1, Kolofe 2, Su’u Harbor, and Bira Bridges), upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports, investments in air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, and support for regional airport maintenance.
