Honiara International Airport Runway Upgrades Progressing
Upgrades to the Honiara International Airport runway and airfield ground lighting, under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), are progressing positively despite delays in receiving offshore materials. Supported by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA), these improvements aim to improve the safety, efficiency, and climate resilience of the country’s major gateway.
At present, only two tasks remain to be completed by the contractor: the installation of runway inset lights and the secondary cable pulling. All other tasks have been successfully completed. While these have been some delays, the contractor is committed to completing all remaining tasks by the revised deadline of October 31, 2024.
Furthermore, new scope of work has been added as variation to the contract. At the request of the Civil Aviation Authority of Solomon Islands, the contractor will also install 90 meters by 90 meters Runway End Safety Area (RESA) at each runway end to comply with International Civil Aviation Organization requirements. These areas are designed to minimize the risk of damage to aircraft in the event of an undershoot or overrun. Work on the RESAs has begun and is scheduled for completion by January 1, 2025.
Alwyn Danitofea, Permanent Secretary of MCA, said, “These upgrades are essential for extending the life of our main international airport, making it safer, more efficient, and more reliable for travellers. They will also support key sectors like tourism, fisheries, agriculture, health, and business.”, he further stated.
SIRAP2 is also bringing widespread benefits to communities across Solomon Islands. This includes the construction of four new bridges in Malaita (Kolofe1, Kolofe2, Su’u Harbor, and Bira Bridges), road upgrades in Noro, and airport improvements in Honiara, Munda, and Santa Cruz. Additionally, air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces are being upgraded, and support for airport maintenance is provided.
