New Life Saving Rescue and Fire Services for Honiara International Airport
Honiara International Airport will be equipped with a new rescue and fire service station with set to commence in early 2024. These safety services are being financed under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA), and supported by the World Bank.
The new airport safety services will be equipped with the latest equipment to deal with any fires and emergencies at the airport.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Aviation, Moses Virivolomo said the rescue and fire service station will maintain an alarm system that can reduce the impact of aircraft and building fires to make passengers and aviation workers safer while reducing losses. Mr. Virivolomo thanked the World Bank for funding the new station.
Egis Asia Company Limited are working on the designs and plans. Once finalized, a tender will follow and then construction of the fire service station. Construction is expected to be completed by early 2025.
SIRAP2 is also constructing four new bridges (Kolofe1, Kolofe2, Su’u Harbour, and Bira) in Malaita, upgrading roads in Noro, providing upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports and Santa Cruz (Lata) Airfield, providing investments in air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, and supporting regional airport maintenance.
