Tender Launched for the Fiu River Bridge Replacement in Malaita Province
Communities and road users in Malaita Province who rely on the Fiu River Bridge are one step closer to a safer, stronger and more reliable crossing, following the launch of the tender for construction of the replacement bridge.
The Solomon Islands Government is seeking a Second Additional Financing from the World Bank for the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), with part of the proceeds to support payments for the Fiu River Bridge Replacement contract. The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), as the implementing agency of SIRAP2, issued the works tender on 9 July 2026, with submissions closing on 18 September 2026. This marks a major milestone towards replacing the existing bridge with a modern, climate-resilient structure designed to improve connectivity and withstand the impacts of increasingly severe weather events.
For many years, the Fiu River Bridge has served as an important transport link for surrounding communities, businesses and travelers. Once completed, the new bridge will provide a safer and more dependable crossing, reduce the risk of disruptions during heavy rainfall and flooding, and improve access to schools, health services, markets and other essential services.
The investment will replace the existing 77-metre existing steel truss bridge with a new 84-metre climate-resilient bridge featuring a two-lane carriageway and a dedicated pedestrian walkway. Works will include upgrading approach roads, constructing new bridge foundations and superstructure, improving drainage systems, carrying out scour protection, embankment and pavement works, installing road safety features, and demolishing the existing bridge, including its piers and abutments.
Acting Permanent Secretary for MID, Mr. Mike Qaqara, welcomed the tender opening, stating:
"The Fiu River Bridge is more than just a bridge. It is a vital connection for families, businesses and essential services. Opening the tender brings us one step closer to delivering a modern crossing that will improve safety, strengthen resilience to climate change and provide reliable access for everyone who depends on this route".
Mr. Qaqara reaffirmed the Government’s commitment, with World Bank support through SIRAP2, to investing in key transport infrastructure that supports economic growth, improves lives and withstands future challenges. He also strongly encouraged qualified contractors to participate in the tender process.
The procurement process will be conducted in accordance with the World Bank's procurement regulations, ensuring a fair, transparent and competitive process. Interested contractors are encouraged to submit their bids before the closing date.
The Fiu River Bridge is one of several key transport infrastructure investments being delivered under SIRAP2 to improve the safety, resilience and reliability of Solomon Islands' road network while supporting inclusive economic and social development across the country.
In addition to the Fiu River Bridge, SIRAP2 is delivering a wide range of critical transport investments across the country. These include ongoing construction of the new Aviation Complex Building in Honiara and Air Traffic Control Towers in Honiara and Munda, the upgrades of Suavanao Airfield in Isabel Province, investments in air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, ongoing maintenance of regional airports, rehabilitation of 21 kilometres of East Road between Baratolo and Atori and sealing of 12 kilometres of North Road between Auki Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction and Kwaisuliniu Road Junction in Malaita.
