Bira and Su’u Harbour Bridges Completed.
The Bira and Su’u Harbour Bridges on South Road in Malaita Province have been fully completed, ahead of Kolofe1 and Kolofe2 Bridges on North Road which are scheduled for completion in the coming months. All four bridges are being constructed under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID). These upgrades support the Solomon Islands Government’s broader efforts to improve road safety, strengthen climate resilience, and enhance year-round connectivity for communities across Malaita Province.
Construction on Bira Bridge was completed on 12 January 2026, while construction of Su’u Harbour Bridge was completed on 17 January 2026, both including installation of steel beam guardrails and road signage. The early completion marks an important milestone for SIRAP2 bridge investments in Malaita. Meanwhile, works at Kolofe1 and Kolofe2 Bridges are scheduled for completion by early March 2026.
Supervising Permanent Secretary of MID, Mike Qaqara, welcomed the progress, stating: These bridge upgrades are critical to ensuring safer and more reliable access for our people. We appreciate the strong partnership between the Government, the World Bank, the Project Support Team, the contractor, and the supervision consultant in delivering these climate resilient investments. The progress achieved so far reflects our shared commitment to improving connectivity and supporting long-term development across Malaita.”
In addition to the bridge work, SIRAP2 continues to advance major infrastructure upgrades in the aviation and road sectors nationwide, including works on Noro Roads, Santa Cruz and Suavanao Airfields, Honiara and Munda International Airports, air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, regional airport maintenance, rehabilitation of 21 kilometres of East Road between Baratolo and Atori, and sealing of 12 kilometres of North Road between Auki Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction and Kwaisuliniu Road Junction.
