Honiara Aviation Complex Building Advances into Construction Phase

Steady progress has been made on the design and build of Honiara Aviation Complex Building, an integral activity of the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), led by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) with the support from the World Bank.

The contractor, China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG), has completed the workers’ resting area and storage area, along with the installation of site noticeboards. Construction of the site office is advancing steadily, while the provision of temporary utilities such as power and water is nearing finalization.

On the technical front, the completion of the Geotechnical Investigation Report marks a crucial step in ensuring the structural soundness and long-term resilience of the building. The final design documents have also been submitted and are currently under review by the supervision  consultant Egis. In parallel, foundation excavation works commenced signaling the transition into structural works and bringing actual progress of the design and build contract to 13 percent.

Looking ahead, upcoming priorities include securing final stakeholder approval for the design package, executing soil replacement in accordance with geotechnical specifications, and commencing concrete works for the foundation.

MCA Permanent Secretary, Alwyn Danitofea, stated “this new aviation complex building for MCA, CAASI, and Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine will ensure aviation work can be conducted faster and more efficiently.”

This new aviation complex building is a vital investment to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of aviation operations at Honiara International Airport.

In addition to the Honiara Aviation Complex Building, SIRAP2 is advancing the construction of Honiara Rescue Fire Services Station, Noro Roads, and four new bridges in Malaita, upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports and Santa Cruz and Suavanao Airfields, installation of air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu provinces, rehabilitation of 21 kilometres of the East Road between Baratolo and Atori and sealing of 12 kilometres of the North Road between Auki Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction and Kwaisuliniu Road Junction.
