Construction of Su’u Harbour and Bira Bridges in Malaita Begins.
Work has officially started on the construction of the Su’u Harbour and Bira Bridges in Malaita Province. The construction is being undertaken with financial support from the World Bank under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2) and is being implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID).
The civil works are being carried out by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). So far, preliminary works including geotechnical investigations and unexploded ordnance clearance have been successfully completed. Mobilization of machinery, equipment, and materials is currently in progress. In addition, the Memorandum of Understanding for the landing site, camp site, and laydown area for Su’u and Bira Bridges were signed between CCECC and the respective landowners on September 9, 2024. Furthermore, the fencing work on laydown area for Su’u Bridge is on-going.
On November 22, 2024, the World Bank approved the Contractor’s Environmental and Social Management Plan, enabling the contractor to commence permanent works on site.
The Permanent Secretary of MID, Allan Lilia, highlighted the importance of the project, stating, “The construction of the Su’u Harbour and Bira Bridges is a vital investment for our national development. These bridges will provide better connections for communities, support economic growth, and improve access to essential services. The Government is committed to seeing these works completed successfully.”
SIRAP2 is designed to improve connectivity, strengthen transportation systems, and support sustainable economic development throughout Solomon Islands. The Su’u Harbour and Bira Bridges are expected to make a significant difference for the people of Malaita Province, improving travel, trade, and access to essential services.
Other key investments under SIRAP2 include upgrading the Santa Cruz airfield in Temotu Province, improving Noro roads in Western Province, construction of two additional bridges in Malaita (Kolofe 1 and Kolofe 2), upgrading Honiara and Munda airports, modernizing air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces and providing ongoing support for maintenance of regional airports.
