Honiara International Airport Perimeter Fencing Progressing Well
The upgrade of the perimeter fencing at Honiara International Airport is advancing steadily, as Solomon Islands' moves towards a safer, more secure, and better-connected aviation network. The works involve the replacement of 4.8 km of damaged fencing and the installation of an automatic sliding gate and three swing gates. These improvements are part of the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA).
MCA have contracted the local contractor, JED Enterprise to undertake the works. So far, the contractor has completed unexploded ordnance survey and clearance works and set up a laydown area, with the works progressing well and expected to be completed at the end of September 2024.
The contractor is actively engaged in multiple tasks including the demolition of the old perimeter fence, construction of a temporary fence, and the installation of approximately 400 new perimeter posts. The contractor has also made progress in the concrete works, with approximately 100m³ of concrete poured (25MPa specification) into the strip, post, and strut footings, covering about 1,600m.
"These new investments will enhance the safety and security of the airport by preventing wildlife from entering operational areas and deterring unauthorized access to sensitive zones such as the active runway, taxiways, and aircraft parking areas,” said MCA Permanent Secretary Alwyn Danitofea.
Alongside the perimeter fencing project, SIRAP2 is also constructing four bridges in Malaita (Kolofe 1, Kolofe 2, Su’u Harbor, and Bira Bridges), upgrading Honiara and Munda International Airports, and Santa Cruz (Lata) Airfield. Additionally, investments are being made in air navigation systems for Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, with support for regional airport maintenance.
