Two MID Officers Attend Practical Road Safety Engineering Workshop in Indonesia
From May 20 to 24, 2024, two Engineers from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), Lawrence Wawane and Rockson Dadalo, participated in a Practical Road Safety Engineering Workshop in Bali, Indonesia. Their attendance was made possible through the support of the World Bank-funded Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2).
The workshop covered several critical topics, including crash investigation processes (blackspots), roadside hazard management, road safety audit processes, signs and markings, safety at road works, and pedestrian safety.
Mr. Wawane expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to attend the workshop, highlighting the practical knowledge gained in road safety engineering. "The training provided us with essential insights. Engineers like us can make a significant difference in road safety. With new knowledge, determination, dedication, and support, we can save lives by incorporating innovative ideas to make our roads safer," he added.
Allan Lilia, Permanent Secretary at MID acknowledged SIRAP2 for facilitating the officers' participation in this crucial workshop. "This workshop is vital as it enhances the skills and knowledge of our officers, enabling them to develop plans and programs to improve road safety engineering, not only in Honiara but also in the provinces," stated Lilia.
Under SIRAP2, investments include the construction of four new bridges in Malaita (Kolofe1, Kolofe2, Su’u Harbor, and Bira Bridges), road upgrades in Noro, enhancements to Honiara, Munda, and Santa Cruz Airports, upgrades to air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, and ongoing airport maintenance support.
