Munda International Airport Terminal Building due for completion in September
The construction of the 60 million Solomon Dollar Munda International Airport Terminal Building is progressing well and due for completion by the end of September 2023. The upgrade comes as part of the Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP), implemented by the Solomon Islands Government with support from the World Bank.
The upgraded airport will boost tourism while allowing fish, agricultural products, and other goods be traded more easily, supporting the economic growth of Western Province and Solomon Islands as a whole. Safer and more reliable travel will also ensure people in Munda, Noro and surrounding islands will have better access to specialist healthcare, employment options and economic opportunities.
The ability for more international flights and opportunities to export fresh Tuna through air freight will see larger economic benefits for Western Province.
“The government through the ministry is pleased with the good work going on at Munda. This is an important achievement for the government and a unique chance for the people of Western Province and the country to take advantage of new opportunities,” Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communication and Aviation, Mr Moses Virivolomo said. “I would like to the thank the World Bank for its support and partnership through SIRAP,” he added.
Now in its second phase, the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2) is also providing upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports and Santa Cruz (Lata) Airfield, investment in air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, and finance for regional airport maintenance.
SIRAP2 is also constructing four new bridges in Malaita, and upgrading the town roads in Noro, Western Province.
