The Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2) National Steering Committee met last week to review progress on major infrastructure projects across Temotu, Isabel, Malaita, Western Province, and Honiara.
During the meeting, committee members received updates highlighting significant developments across all project sites. In Temotu, the upgrade of Santa Cruz Airfield is progressing steadily, enhancing air connectivity and safety in one of the nationโs most remote provinces. In Isabel, preparations for the Suavanao Airfield upgrade have commenced, marking the start of a vital project aimed at improving tourism and regional access.
In Western Province, work on the Noro Road upgrade is nearing completion, providing safer and more reliable access for communities and local businesses. In Malaita, construction of four new bridges is underway, alongside upgrades to the North and East Roads, strengthening transport links and overall road resilience. In Honiara, construction of the Aviation Complex Building and the Rescue Fire Service Station at Henderson International Airport is progressing well, enhancing the cityโs aviation infrastructure and emergency response capabilities.
The National Steering Committee (NSC) also discussed challenges faced during project implementation and explored strategies to overcome them, ensuring timely delivery and quality outcomes.
Speaking at the meeting, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), Allan Lilia, said:
"We are pleased with the commitment and professionalism shown by our contractors and partners. These projects are vital for enhancing connectivity, safety, and economic growth across the Solomon Islands, and we remain focused on ensuring they are delivered efficiently and to the highest standards."
The Committee commended the dedication of contractors and implementing partners, noting the critical role these projects play in improving connectivity, accessibility, and economic opportunities across the country.
The meeting was attended by Provincial Secretaries from Temotu, Isabel, Malaita, and Western Provinces, the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) and the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA), and representatives from line ministries, including SIRAP2 Managers, who served as the secretariat.
